Invader It took me far too long to write about this album; I enjoy Danielle’s style of writing it always sends me to places of deep thought and reflection. There is this beautiful simplicity in the way Danielle writes; you have what’s on the forefront and then all that is hidden behind. All these gems of great depth and profound meaning. I spent several weeks listening to and pondering on these tracks. The thing I find so spectacular about music is the way it can take on different meanings for each individual listening. There is no right answer or no correct way to interpret music. There are the reasons behind why a songwriter wrote what they did and what it means for them and perhaps there are those out there who are striving to find what exactly the artist is writing about, but I am simply striving to discover what a track is telling me. Now if something I gleam from a track happens to coincide with what the artist was wanting to say of course I love that, and I enjoy those rare occurrences when they do happen. What I really enjoyed about diving into these tracks and all the ones that I have written about previously is what I learn about myself as I do so. I especially connected with the Deluxe Edition of her sophomore album Delayed Reaction. Having said that I am longing for her to separate herself from Jack Antonoff. He has worked on the last seven of Swift’s releases not including any re-recording and I am definitely ready for something new. It is not that I didn’t enjoy the previous six albums or this one, I have been thoroughly entertained by them. It is just that as I was listening the similarities between all Swift’s albums from the past decade it really hit me for some reason. Part of it is knowing that there are plenty of other extremely capable producers in the music scene and in my humble, non-musically educated opinion Antonoff has received more than enough attention. I am also just interested in hearing something that has a different sound, something new. I am certainly not holding my breath for this to happen as there are no signs of this coming at all but I can dream right? Secondly on the spectrum of Swifties I am actually pretty far from the top. I don’t bother following relationship drama or really any drama in the media. So as always there are definitely references in this album that I will not discuss at all. I don’t so much care which tracks are about what person. I just want to discuss what I gleaned from a few of the tracks as I listened. It includes live demo’s of a number of tracks and it can be found here on Bandcamp. I will start out by saying it is fantastic! I have written quite a few posts about Alanna’s music over the past few years and have tried many times to state why I find it so moving and I don’t know that I have ever done a very good job at that. I would that it is beautifully tragic, in the most cathartic and uplifting kind of way. Sometimes you need to feel emotions in your life be it sadness, pain, anger or any number of other emotions in order to work through your life experiences. Alanna’s music has a unique way of getting me to feel things. There is something else I really enjoy about Alanna’s music and I don’t believe I have stated this previously as I don’t that I have consciously noticed it before. It is how much I enjoy the chorus in their tracks. The chorus always ties the song together in such an outstanding way and there is so much substance to be found within them. I really enjoy Alanna’s style of writing; it always feels as if it is this stream of wonderfully authentic free flowing thought. I find that it is often the chorus which I instantly resonate with and latch on to. Every track on this demo is incredible and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. There is something so remarkably captivating about well executed harmonies. I was inspired to do an additional write up when I heard an exquisite cover of “Graveyard” performed by the illustrious Tall and Small, a magnificent duo that I wrote about in length here. I don't know what it was about exactly about this performance that made things click for me but they did. Suddenly all these thoughts began running through my mind. I had a renewed understanding of what the track meant to me and why it has always pulled me in so strongly. For the last six months or so I have coming back this whenever a new insight came to mind and it has been an interesting experience to see how it has developed over that time. I am really stoked about this write up even more so because it is one of the very few times that something I have posted was a collaborative effort. I shake my cane and talk about how it sounds like a dialup modem or that it seems to overpower the artist which keeps me from enjoying the lyrics. That was very much not the case here. I really enjoy the way this track builds and at all times I felt like the music worked in tandem with the vocalist and was quite complimentary. I thoroughly enjoy the sound of this track and I wish I possessed any knowledge about audio engineering so that I could talk more about how well done the production on this track is. I was only aware of Melissa before this tracks release but I was compelled to check out the Spotify libraries of these artists after listening to "Never Love” and I found many tracks to enjoy. It was back in 2004, I was nearly 15 years old and was stoked to see one of my favorite bands Jimmy Eat World who were currently touring for their fifth studio album Futures (which I still maintain is one of the best albums they’ve released but that is a discussion for another time perhaps). I remember seeing the opening act was a band called The Killers; which judging only by the name didn’t strike me as a band that would fit with the sort of alternative emo sound that Jimmy Eat World were delivering especially with the Futures which is an emotional climb for sure. So it didn’t really know what to expect and didn’t have high expectations. 1989 I feel I have said enough how much I am enjoying all these Taylor’s Version album releases, they are so much more than just re-releases not only because of all the entirely new tracks we are getting but also due to all the effort that has been put into updating and improving upon each track. This was my favorite album of Taylor’s for quite awhile because of just how new and unique it was; any country roots that were still present within the previous album “Red” essentially disappeared. What we got was something so different in the best way possible. There was an EP which released back in May which only served to skyrocket my level of excitement. I am happy to say that the wait was so incredibly worth it This is a tremendous album with so much to unpack and discover. I am in awe. The writing is so poetic in a classical, traditional sort of way that I don’t come across very often. As I was digging through the tracks it really felt so much like analyzing poetry even more so than usual. There are occasionally moments when I come across a song that truly causes me to think deeply, look at my past and to even take a look inside myself. As I went through this album I had more of those moments than I was expecting. It was an awe-inspiring experience. From the very start I was impressed by just how magnificently honest and vulnerable her lyrics are; almost brutally so. At the same they are also fantastically clever and when you combine that with her voice and the brilliant way in which she composes music you have this perfect storm of musical genius which will hit your feelings right in the intended place every single time. However it didn’t take one full listen for me to become obsessed with this new version of the album. As I listened this time around I was able to give the albums lyrics the attention they deserved. I could easily talk about the ingenious lyrics that exist in each track but I thought people probably don’t want to read ten pages of my rambling. The powerful belting ballad’s that once dominated the scene are now in the background especially when it comes to my own personal preferences. Many of the influential pop singers are going for the deeply emotional, breathy and soft tones to their tracks. It’s as if a conversation is happening rather than a feeling of being talked at. I find such tracks feel a lot more personal and moving. While Abrams may not have been at the forefront of this movement, she is certainly championing this shift in focus. I stumbled across her EP a couple of years ago but it didn’t really hit me until I revisited it last year. I was struck by both the hard hitting lyrical riffs and the powerful emotions conveyed by the unique timbre of Gracie Abrams voice. Abrams debut album is bedroom pop perfection. Porter Robinson – nurture (chronological tracklist) I am admittingly a relatively new acquaintance of Porter Robinson’s music; his is not a genre that I typically find myself drawn to. While I thought this album was solid when it released last year it didn’t really click with me until I discovered this chronological tracklist this year for some reason the album in this new order hit me differently. It doesn’t really feel like the same genre as other music I have listened to from him, it have a distinct vibe and it really does have this marvelous natural sort of feel to it. This album really sold me on his music and caused to take a closer look at more of his music. Lucius – Second Nature One of two surprise discoveries for me last year was Lucius, I love the way their voices blend together so magnificently as well as the brilliant, upbeat very 80’s-esque sound which the album manages to create. It made for a great album to thrown on while I took drives through the countryside. I was amazed by the superb ways in which their voices blended and harmonized with each other. In one of the tracks both Brandi Carlile and Sheryl Crow are added into the mix and it is perfection. Seven Lions – Beyond The Veil I have been listening to Seven Lions for a number of years now and I always enjoy the vocalists they collaborate with and they continued that tradition with the latest album. By bringing in the vocal talents of musicians such as Lights and Dia Frampton there was no way this album wasn’t going to top my favorites list. For me it delivered on all accounts. The collaborations are so good especially since this isn’t the first time many of these artists have worked together. Alvvays – Blue Rev Since the formation of the band Alvvays has consistently delivered absolutely brilliant albums; it seems to me they can do no wrong. As each new album drops, I am never even the least bit disappointed. I really enjoyed the bright and upbeat melody of the track “After The Earthquake”. The whole album, even the more moving and somber themed tracks have that same upbeat feel to them. I found all the tracks to be impossible not to enjoy. Charli XCX – Crash If you have spent much time reading my blog than you know that love, relationships, heartbreak, and everything that goes with them are subjects I often chose to discuss. So for me this album was an emotional gold mine. The very first time I listened to this album it was like I was on the receiving end of an emotional beat down. It was visceral, and also heartfelt. It felt very different from the artists previous work at least as far as I was aware. I was hooked from the start, the tracks on this album make you feel the pain of heartbreak and betrayal in a most relatable way. Kendra Lyssa – Your Party At the time of writing, I am currently enjoying watching Kendra on Twitch. The musical talent I witness whenever I watch a stream is unchanging. Outstanding songs are created on the spot about things like going to the gym or diving people to the airport and these improvised songs are so good that I would pay good money to have them on an album so that I could listen to them over and over. Kendra always has this incredibly genuine feel to her performances and the track “Your Party” released last year showcases this exquisitely. The first time I heard it, I found the lyrics so engaging. I remember thinking to myself “yeah I’ve definitely felt that before.” The track captures so many different emotions all at once and creates this experience which is so real its almost as if you are in the situation yourself. It is quite easy to tell that music started playing a major part in his life when he was young, and it has only become more integral as he has gotten older. He infuses the experience and knowledge he has gained along the way brilliantly into his music. Even more so than usual I wish that I had more than an elementary understanding of music theory so that I could comment on all the magnificent musical twist and turns this album takes. The collaboration album In This Together has a cohesiveness to it that is impressive; I am amazed by the way all styles of these different come to together so spectacularly. I tried once listening to this album in a random order and it just did not feel the same; there was a something I got when listening to the album in the intended order that was not there otherwise, I cannot really explain it. There are four words that you can find Luke’s Bandcamp page & his Spotify profile: “Music first. Poetry second.” I would caution that you do not take these words the wrong way. This in no way should be taken to mean that you will not find some spectacularly crafted tales within his lyrics. In fact, my impression is that much time and effort is taken to ensure the lyrics are saying exactly what is intended. While listening to “Love Story” or “Long Live” I never would have thought that one day we would be here. Through it all she maintained what I have always considered to be the essence of her music which is weaving emotional tales in her songs. The subject matter has matured as one would expect but for me since her very first album, she has been telling emotional and meaningful stories. Midnights is no exception in fact I would say that this album contains some of the most fervent, affecting stories she has ever told. They hit so hard because it is easy to tell that Swift has a strong connection to the subject matter. I would describe the tone of this EP as exquisite melancholy; there is a somber feel to it which inspires study and it feels calming to listen to. Matty is a stupendous entertainer as well being an awesome singer-songwriter. I am often a silent viewer of his live streams they provide great ambience as I go about my day. Ever since I found out that this album was coming I knew once it arrived it would be fantastic beyond belief, that I would be utterly blown away and I would find it to have been well worth the wait. I was not at all disappointed. It includes the two singles which I have discussed previously: Loved You First and End Up Alone as well as my favorite track “Dreamless” from an album I have I talked about five times previously, Ante Meridiem. Needless to say I am ecstatic to have this reimagined version of the track. I feel that all the time, effort and care that was clearly put into this albums creation truly shines through in the finished product. I am now having a remarkably challenging time deciding what my favorite Melissa Lamm song is. Every track on this EP is incredible; Melissa's writing conveys emotions that I have experienced but feel incapable of expressing. Each track takes me to a wholly different place. I can see each scene so vividly in my mind, I feel immersed in the headspace of the song's subject and it is all done so succinctly. I love that about music and I wish I could write in a similar manner. Virginia Wolf thought much on the same lines, she once said “Music goes straight for things. It says all there is to say at once. She is very enjoyable and easy to talk to. My typical social awkwardness existed only in minimal amounts. We talked mainly about music; big surprise there. I came away from the discussion having learned a few things. Perhaps this is too much influence from entertainment media but I very naively have been operating under the assumption that people who decide to become career musicians have had some sort of earth shattering moment that caused them to make this rather life altering decision. I thought for sure something fantastic must have inspired them to take on a career that is challenging for a myriad of reasons. While I still do believe that it is something tremendous that inspires them I now am aware that it doesn’t always come from some marvelous, lightning strike type of moment. When I posed the question “what inspired you to become a singer-songwriter?” to Jenem she didn’t have any single moment to cite. Rather it was many seemingly small things which added up over many years. Music always inspired her as she grew up listening to it but there was no specific musical push or an extraordinary enthusiasm for music in her childhood home. As I pondered on this it made a great deal of sense to me and I began to think that this is likely the case for many musicians. Not everyone is going to have one experience so astounding that it causes them to make a significant life decision. I went on to ask “what is the most rewarding part of songwriting?” I may butcher this but I will do my best to word this as eloquently as it was delivered to me. Songwriting is a brilliant way to work through and process emotions; it can oftentimes be a way to find closure after making it through a harrowing experience. It is also a way to highlight a memorable experience so that it can be forever remembered. She ended by saying that it could also be a most precious gift that you give to someone else and what a gift it would be if a song you wrote for someone which granted them catharsis after an agonizing experience. As I thought about that I was hard pressed to think of a more cherished or beloved gift that I could receive. I may value music more than some but regardless I couldn’t think of anything. I believe that music has the ability to impart feelings to others in a way that is not possible with any other medium. Essentially she figured that the best way to get over any stage fright was just to throw herself in the deep end and go for it. This is not only good advice for performing but solid advice for life in general. Sometimes you just have to forget your fears, trepidations and just go for something. I admire those who are able to turn their weaknesses into strengths through courage and hard work. While it was nerve racking at first it quickly became a most enjoyable activity through which she created a multitude of fantastic memories. This includes a busking tour with fellow musician Courtney Visser; who also streams music on the Twitch platform. This sounded both fascinating and frightening to me. I love the unique opportunity that the Twitch platform presents to get to know artists better and listen to them talk about their music. It adds a new element to the music listening experience when you know where an artist is coming from when they wrote a particular song. Of course you cannot get the opportunity to chat with every artist you enjoy on Twitch but when you have the chance to chat one on one it adds another layer onto your music listening experience. I would love the chance to meet any of the musicians I have discovered through just in person one day; I imagine that would add even more. Technology affords many opportunities that would be impossible otherwise but it is not a replacement for in person interaction. Whether songwriting is your hobby, your career or something in between it is an act which I believe involves a great deal of selflessness. Those who compose music proficiently are able to do so because they are conveying their own thoughts and feelings through their music. They are willing to release these pieces of themselves into the world in hopes that others can find joy and solace through them. From minor problems such as trying to survive junior high school, to the most traumatic ordeal of losing my father as a teenager.
