Beneath the Stars
It has been a bit since I wrote anything. Even good problems are still problems and there has been so much fantastic music released lately I have been starting a number of write ups and not finishing them. I am once again committing to change that.
I have wrote about the music of Matty Twigg before and I always enjoy when I get to do so; he is not only a fantastic musician but a real class act. He does so much to help build up the Twitch music community and always has such great things to say about the musicians on Twitch that he is acquainted with.
I have really been enjoying this album but despite all the time I have had with it I still feel like there is so much more to discover and I know that I will be gleaning insights for this album for years to come.
You can check out this album of Matty’s music on Spotify and Bandcamp
Everything Moves
“I took a flight of fancy that night
I met you and it carried me through
Into your arms I was willfully charmed
And from everything else I withdrew”
“Took a flight” Perhaps representative for a length of time far longer than one night. These two individuals embarked on a journey together and for awhile it was pleasant. I wonder what is meant by “And from everything else I withdrew” I tend to go for negative meaning that being that this person caused you to forsake other relationships you had and devote all of your attention to them. A healthy relationship shouldn’t require this kind of sacrifice. When you are so swept up in something though something like this happens without you even realizing it.
“ And the world fell around me
As the truth was revealed “
“The world fell around me” these two created a new world all of their own and as I said for a time it seemed good but it was made of glass. For as the truth was revealed it all shattered. At least that’s the impression I get from the next part.
“ Time would advance spent with you in a trance
Inseparable, or so it would seem
I was struck with the bite, heard you talking that night
In a place where I shouldn’t have been“
“Struck with a bite” is a magnificent way of illustrating what betrayal feels like. I wonder if “where I shouldn’t have been” is meant they shouldn’t have been there because they were spying, being distrustful or if it’s more meant to denote that they shouldn’t have been there because it caused them to hear something that part of them wished they hadn’t.
“Told all your friends it was me in the end
As you tore down everything we had been
But looking back now lord i’m thankful for how
My eavesdropping, in fact set me free”
“Told all your friends it was me in the end” this feels like a real classy move which I don’t know that I’d be up for if I was put in the situation. I can understand it though if you know what happened what do you really accomplish by tearing down someone else? “But looking back now…” this is why I said earlier that only part of them wished they hadn’t heard what they did as it in fact was a truth that set them free. There is something about this section that makes it seem like it took place over a substantial period of time. Other than “looking back now” there’s no specific reason I have for this it’s just the feeling the track gives me.
“Everything moves at incredible speed
Everything changes with time
Everything falls in times of need
And everything must follow true
Everything changes, Even You”
This feels like a healthy way to reflect on a negative situation that’s you been through. Saying the only constant is change, everything moves and changes sometimes it feels like things fail you when you need them most. It sucks but it’s just how life is. You live, you learn and deal with issues as they come.
This is such a fantastic song that plays out like an epic tale from a story book. Matty writes and sings in the manner of a brilliant storyteller. He’s a true bard and one that I greatly admire.
Echoes of Eternity
“In the Pale of the Moon you walk at night
Through the old and ancient wood to find your way
The shadows loom here in black and white
Many hunters restless seeking for the prey
Beneath a multitude of stars you will find your way
Through the cold and distant land that you call home
And all of the world may be your enemy
But first they’ll have to catch you wherever you roam
Don’t let them catch you, you were born for something else here
Don’t you know what you can be?
You stand alone but you are guided by much more now
The Echoes of Eternity
In a moment of calm, you sit alone
See the beauty of the world before your eyes
In the quiet of the night, everything that glows
Binds together, shows you things beyond your sight
So run my friend, run fast, run ever-more
And know you’re part of all that’s good beneath the sky
You’ll be chased, they’ll hunt you down,
But blessed be all those unbound,
Your soul they’ll never own, run fast and fly
Don’t let them catch you, you were born for something else here
Don’t you know what you can be?
You stand alone but you are guided by much more now
The Echoes of Eternity “
While I’m sure I could dig and find some real world meaning for this song every time I hear it, it just makes me think of a D&D character. It weaves this outstanding incredibly fantasy sounding tale of an individual roaming this cursed land on the run from enemy's unknown. They stalk in the night and have a gift of sight beyond the sight of mere mortals. I want so much more of this story. I want to portray this character. Like many things though it only exists in my crazy mind.
Ghost
“Taking my time as my life unwinds
And i fall again
Passing through walls till I’m nothing at all,
Falling out of sight
You cannot see me, ‘Cause I am a Ghost
A wandering ghoul, I’m apparently lost
You could pass through me, I’m simply not there
Wandering the halls hoping doors won’t be closed
As I fade away
Taking my leave from life no longer lived
I am such a fright
You cannot see me, ‘Cause I am a Ghost
A wandering ghoul, I’m apparently lost
You could pass through me, I’m simply not there
There’s nothing to me, I cease to exist
A revenant fool in a life that I missed
You’ll go right through me because I am a Ghost”
This feels quite somber even hopeless to me. To feel as if you walk through life unseen and not understood it’s a grim existence to be sure. It’s one thing to feel like this in certain places or situations; I mean this was my experience in primary school, I was the weird kid eating lunch in the library and studying. I was a part of other groups though where I did feel connected and that I belonged.
Certainly there have been times in the depths of depression where I have felt alone though as I have met more people with similar struggles this feeling creeps in less and less. Enough about me though, the song truly makes me feel this deep and heavy sadness, you can feel for this person as you may have felt similar at times but also you really wish you could help this person. I don’t want anyone to feel this way.
Black Hole
“Trying to think back where it was, I lost track
First of many a bad compromise
I was caught in a trap yet unable to act
I could only see into your eyes
Like a moth to the flame, with no one else to blame
I followed her into the night
Surprised even myself, became somebody else
Didn’t stop to think if it was right
Ohhh…
I fell through
You drew me in, wore me down
You’re the black hole baby in which i drown
You pulled me in, Without a doubt
You’re a black hole baby, I can’t get out “
A black hole is an astronomical object with a gravitational field so intense that it prevents anything from escaping; even light. Between that definition and what we get previously in this track I think its safe to say this isn’t at all a good thing. Drew in like a moth to the flame, wore down and gave in. It paints a clear picture in a fantastic way.
“Don’t know my own station, this infatuation
Is draining me of my life’s blood
You push and you pull breaking all of the rules
What happened to old fashioned love “
“Draining me of my life’s blood” A love vampire, bleeds you dry and leaves you for dead in an emotional sense of course such an ordeal has physical effects as well they just don’t include being drained of blood. “You push and you pull...” I find part so interesting; I have thought quite a bit on the many things it could be referencing. With the other details of the song in mind I think this is talking about a relationship in there is a mutual love and respect and just generally a feeling of equality in a relationship. These shouldn’t be old fashioned idea’s, and I think that is part of the point of the reference and what the track is saying.
“We’re tearing apart, oh the closer we are
As no one can draw up to the mark
We twist and we shout, break apart and lash out
Throw away and go back to the start
Poor you…
We fell through
You drew me in, wore me down
You’re the black hole baby in which i drown
You pulled me in, without a doubt
You’re a black hole baby, I can’t get out”
This track set out to tell a story and it does so magnificently. All the parts of this track come together in a way that really makes me experience the pain and anguish that’s present.
Beneath the Stars
Think about it as you lie there staring at the stars
Sky above you opens up pulls you from afar
You’re a falling star in a vast expanse adrift
A fleeting spark burning out into the rift
We’ll be gone, but this moment will be ours
We were here, Here beneath the stars
Take a breath and take the time to stop where you may be
Live the journey not the end forget what you can’t see
You’re a falling star in a vast expanse adrift
You’re a fleeting spark burning out into the rift
We’ll be gone, but this moment will be ours
We were here, Here beneath the stars “
I thoroughly enjoy songs such as this, songs that can say so much without many lyrics. This is a stupendous summary of the experience of life and how to live. While having plans is good you cannot let it distract you from savoring the important moments that you have whether they be good or bad. I know that may sound weird to say but I think it's important to remember all the profound moments of life some won’t be great but they do help to realize how good things are when they are good, as cliche as that may sound.
“Take a breath and take the time to stop where you may be
Live the journey not the end forget what you can’t see “
This is my favorite part of the track. You can only worry so much about the future, “forget what you can’t see” and be present. Find the good in your life as your living it. This is a poetic and philosophical track there is so much to digest here.
“We’ll be gone, but this moment will be ours
We were here, Here beneath the stars “
Regardless of what life throws at you there are these moments that you can look back on, you will have them to help get you through and to appreciate the things you have.
